Report from the SG Nesbitt Community Centre in Minden: The closure of the “Scotch Pine Trail (SPT)”

Minden, March 13, 2019 – On March 13th the SG Nesbitt Community Centre in Minden was packed with OHV enthusiasts. The meeting was initiated to address parking concerns but when the notice of the closure of the “Scotch Pine Trail (SPT)” slipped out the OHV gang was quick to react. The talk of parking was completely overshadowed by the trail closure. The local mayor, two of the town councilors and the Park Superintendent were in attendance. COHV was represented by Paul Demers and David Grummett.

The Scotch Pine Trail skirts the Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Park. By the way, this park is the second largest park in the province only out sized by the mighty Algonquin. However Algonquin is a managed park and the Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Park is unmanaged. This is probably why a lot of us have never heard of it.

Topography dictates that the Scotch Pine Trail dips into the park for short distances in 3 places. Locals say the trail is approximately 75 years old as it allowed access to remote hunt camps. The area was declared a park in the late 90’s. Therefore the park was built around the trail.

Park Superintendent Jason Dwyer made a presentation at the meeting and took full responsibility for the trail closure. Reason given was proximity to species at risk. No data was given to support this. No consultation was made with the user groups that use the trail.

The interesting point was the majority of the trail is outside the park and therefore outside the jurisdiction of the Park Superintendent. Jason mentioned more than a few times that the decision has been made for 2019. His decision! The groups decided the best response was to basically go over Jason’s head. The mayor and councilors said they would meet with the local MPP & Minister of the Environment & Parks Rod Phillips to try to resolve the closure.

The Scotch Pine Trail is a very popular trail serving the ATV, Side by Side and 4WD enthusiasts. It’s popularity brings a significant economic impact to the area. The 4WD group mentioned that they had raised $75k for the Minden Hospital this year alone. In addition to its recreational value it also provides access to many hunt camps in the park. The closure of the trail is unacceptable without some consultation with the user groups to define and address the issues.

We encourage you to politely support this cause with emails to the following;
MPP (Local) Laurie Scott laurie.scott@pc.ola.org
MPP (Special Advisor for Parks) Dave Smith dave.smith@pc.ola.org
MPP (Minister of the Environment & Parks) Rod Phillips rod.phillips@pc.ola.org

THE COMMUNITY IS GROWING! ALMOST 19% MORE RIDERS WILL BE TRAVELLING QUEBEC ROADS THIS SUMMER

Montreal, February 18, 2019 – The passion for motorbikes is as strong as ever.  Following the implementation of new Highway Safety Code rules last year, the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec has seen an increase of nearly 19 per cent in the number of learners’ licences (Class 6A) issued. Over a five-year period, this represents a 6.6 per cent increase in learners’ licences. Several thousand new bike enthusiasts are already looking forward to heading out for adventure as soon as the weather improves. For these new and seasoned riders, the Montreal Motorcycle Show, presented by La Capitale General Insurance, is the perfect opportunity to plan and prepare for an exciting and safe season.

“This is great news for all riders. Interest in the sport is growing and this will drive the industry to keep innovating in terms of safety, comfort and pleasure,” explained Bianca Kennedy, Manager of the Montreal Motorcycle Show.

The Quebec government used to require learners to be accompanied by experienced riders on their own bikes. According to Stéphane Guertin, Marketing Manager for Tecnic, the rule change should have a positive impact on road safety. “In fact, some were ignoring the rule. Others waited until the 11-month learning phase was over, which meant they delayed applying all the knowledge and skills acquired during the driving course. Now this knowledge will be fresh in their memories and can be more readily applied, allowing new riders to rapidly gain experience.

“We’ve noticed a more diverse clientele in our schools across the province,” said Mr. Guertin. “People who register more spontaneously and an increase in the number of women and young people. It’s hard to evaluate the recent data, but it will be interesting to see how the market changes in the short to medium term.”

The season revs up at the Motorcycle Show

Here are the attractions you won’t want to miss:

A demonstration unit will allow visitors to test Honda’s flagship Gold Wing, which offers a seven-speed DCT transmission and the ultimate in motorcycle luxury. The unit has been specially designed to highlight the benefits and ease of using Honda’s advanced dual clutch transmission. Whether you shift manually with the handlebar buttons or use the fully automatic mode, the DCT offers the efficiency of a manual gearbox with the advantage of smooth gear shifting performance (up and down). This will be the perfect opportunity to try it out!

The Show is also bringing back several always popular attractions, including the She Rides night on Friday, February 22.  In addition to ½ price admission for women after 5 pm, ladies also have a chance to win a Kawasaki Versys-X 300. The Yamaha Riding Academy is always a hit with kids 6 to 12 years old, and all ages will enjoy the Trials Demos featuring four-time Canadian trials champion Jordan Szoke and his family. Be sure to stop by Hangar 17, produced in collaboration with ONELAND. Even larger and more varied this year, it brings together motorcycle builders, artists and riders who share a passion for everything two-wheels and the open road.

All the major brands, new products, destinations, accessories and innovative technology under one roof. Be there!

ENJOY THE RIDE (Edmonton Motorcycle & ATV Show)

EDMONTON, AB (January 3, 2019) – The Motorcycle & ATV Show – Edmonton presented by Dalton Timmis Insurance is the industry’s premiere event.  The industry leading manufacturers will debut all the new models at the Edmonton Expo Centre, January 11-13.

“Although there are hundreds of new models on display at the Motorcycle & ATV Show – Edmonton,” says Laurie Paetz, Show Manager, “ the following is a sample of some of the must see models for 2019.”

Three Wheelers

The Yamaha Niken GT Revolutionary Leaning Multi Wheel (LMW) chassis provides unparalleled rider confidence over a variety of road conditions. The powerplant is borrowed from the MT/FZ09 platform and offers great power and torque. The Niken comes with advanced electronic rider aids for safety and convenience including cruise control. The GT model comes with hard bags too.

Piaggio debuted the world’s first three-wheel scooter in 2006 and the new 2019 MP3 500 HPE features a number of innovations since that time.  Piaggio has reinvented urban mobility.  Its liquid cooled 4 stroke single puts out 44 hp, has an automatic transmission (no clutch) and comes standard with ABS and traction control systems. Braking is done with either/or hand and foot controls. Manual lock and auto unlock means you can stop at traffic lights and never have to put your feet down yet it leans into corners like any two wheel scooter or motorcycle.

The Can-Am Ryker is designed for fun.  With its optimized center-of gravity it ensures you are always in complete control.  The innovative UFit System™ has adjustable ergonomic features, like footpegs, brake and handlebars you can position according to your build, allowing you to match your ride to your riding style.  The Ryker comes with either a Rotax 600 or 900 cc ACE engine offering performance-minded drivers and novices alike an exciting new Sport Mode.

Adventure

The 2019 BMW F850GS is new and improved over its predecessor – the F800GS.  2019 brings 95 hp, spoked wheels (a 21” front) and Rallye styling to make the new GS at home in the dirt. It’s also comfortable on the road with a 6.5’ TFT display and typical GS ergonomics. Options include adjustable seat height plus navigation and connectivity.

The Moto Guzzi V85 TT Adventure is new from the ground up but it’s still based on traditional Italian 90 degree transverse V-twin with shaft drive. Simple, light and practical.  The TT acronym, meaning “tutto terreno”, or all-terrain, it identifies a motorcycle dedicated to travel in its purest and most original form. Moto Guzzi V85 TT combines style features reminiscent of the golden age of motorcycle adventures with the content and functionality of a modern touring enduro.

The KTM 790 Adventure and Adventure R arrive in Canada just in time for the motorcycle shows.  Both bikes are high performance, lightweight sporty travel bikes with off-road genes. The parallel twin motor has 94 hp and is tuned to deliver its torque lower down in the rev range to fit the specific requirements of adventure riding. With a predicted fuel range of over 400 km your fun won’t stop for hours and your routes won’t be determined by gas stations.

ATV/Side-by-sides

Honda – Honda’s brand new Talon sport Side by Side is performance driven. Honda durability comes from the 999cc parallel twin also used in the Pioneer and Africa Twin. It boasts the industry’s only gear driven transmission offering full auto or full manual shifting via the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. It has Intelligent 4 WD and hill start assist all wrapped in a beautiful sport chassis.

The limited edition has aero wings just like its MotoGP cousin.

Ducati counters with the Panigale V4. Touted as Ducati’s maximum expression of their racing DNA, This bike provides pure racing adrenaline under control from its 1000 cc dry clutch, 221 HP V4 motor. The Panigale has state of the art Moto GP inspired electronics to make sure the power gets to the ground while the bike remains stable.

It’s lighter, more powerful and more than its predecessors and has an ergonomically perfect seating position. Want more, add the infamous BMW “M” package to make the ultimate race machine.

Feel the Noise – The Vancouver Motorcycle Show is back!

The exciting show rolls into Abbotsford Tradex – January 18 – 20 2019

For Immediate Release

December 11, 2018

Abbotsford, BC – The Vancouver Motorcycle Show, which has built its reputation on bringing the best in powersports brands together, is back for its annual three-day bike unveiling at the Tradex in Abbotsford.

From January 18-20, 2019, gearheads and maximum torque lovers will be able to get their fix and find their ride with the newest makes and models of motorcycles as well as the latest accessories and technology featured all under one roof.

Back by popular demand, local stunt group VanCity Stunters will be generating their usual flurry of smoke-filled excitement with their acrobatic motorcycle maneuvering and high-energy performances their fans have come to expect. Group founder and Langley resident Matt Bush says the group of riders, which includes none other than Maple Ridge favorite Bill Hitchon, famous for his ATV one-of-a-kind tricks, will have a new show featuring new surprising stunts.

“No one will want to miss what we have planned,” assures Bush.

New to the outdoor stage this year will be none other than the Seattle Cossacks Motorcycle Stunt and Drill Team. Driving up from their hometown in Washington state, the team, who is celebrating their 80th anniversary this year, will be bringing their vintage Harleys – some of which are even older than the team’s official beginning.

“We can’t wait to see these iconic professional stunt riders, who at points in their performances, become human pyramids, all without ropes, props, skyhooks or gimmicks of any kind” says show manager Laurie Paetz.

Vintage Harley lovers will be able to further satisfy their passion inside the Tradex as well as Trev-DeeleyMotorcycles present their highly rare of vintage collection that includes a 1926 JD, 1933 VLE, 1944 EL 1953 K Sport, 1954 FL, 1966 XLH and 1973 SX350.

Seasoned riders attending the Show will not want to miss how to demonstrations from professional riding instructor Clinton Smout who will demonstrate techniques ranging from clutch control to avoiding obstacles and slow speed maneuvers. Smout’s arsenal of tips and tricks are guaranteed to increase riders’ confidence levels for the riding season ahead.  After visitors are armed with their fill of riding tips, they can relax in the Moto Lifestyle Lounge where they will hear live entertainment and be able to view up-close customized Triumph motorcycles.

SHE Rides is back for its Friday night premier where the entry fee for ladies is cut in half after 5 pm. Excitingly, one lucky lady on this night will walk away with a new Kawasaki Versys – X 300 ABS courtesy of Kawasaki. The grand prize draw will take place on Friday evening at 8:30 pm and the winner must be present to win. She will also have to be over 19 years of age and will be required to show valid photo identification upon claiming her prize.

And for those who don’t win the She Rides prize, the Kawasaki Double-Take Giveaway has returned. Two Kawasaki Z125 PROs will be given away at the Show on Saturday January 19th. The Z125 PRO is fondly referred to as a nimble streetfighter that is designed to defy what a lightweight motorcycle can be. This motorcycle draw is open to all show attendees, over the age of 19.  Show attendees must fill out their electronic ballots at the Kawasaki booth from 12 pm to 3:45 pm on Saturday to be eligible for the draw that will take place at 4 pm in the front hall.

Yamaha Riding Academy is also returning for kids between the ages of six to 12 who want to learn how to ride the latest Yamaha TT-R off-road motorcycle, in a safe and secure environment and in the company of trained and certified instructors. Each riding session is approximately 15 minutes and is limited to eight riders total. The academy is free-of-charge with admission.

For the even younger riders is the Show’s Strider Adventure Zone where children as young as 18 months and up to the age of five can take part in test riding a Strider Bike, all while improving and developing fundamental bike-handling skills. Parents and caregivers will have an opportunity to watch their children weave through a course that includes tires, rumble strips and ramps. Regardless of their skill levels, children who participate will have a blast as they either learn new riding skills or advance the ones they already have and make new friends while doing so. Families are encouraged to visit the adventure zone in the show’s outside feature tent so they can book their children’s riding experience.

ENJOY THE RIDE – (Calgary Motorcycle Show 2019)

CALGARY, AB (December 20, 2018) – The Motorcycle Show – Calgary presented by Dalton Timmis Insurance is the industry’s premiere event.  The industry leading manufacturers will debut all the new models at the BMO Centre, Stampede Park January 4-6.

“Although there are hundreds of new models on display at the Motorcycle Show – Calgary,” says Laurie Paetz, Show Manager, “ the following is a sample of some of the must see models for 2019.”

The Moto Guzzi V85 TT Adventure is new from the ground up but it’s still based on traditional Italian 90 degree transverse

V-twin with shaft drive.

Cruisers

Harley-Davidson® FXDR™ 114 is designed with a number of alloy and composite components to reduce overall weight. Its inverted race-style forks with single-cartridge technology improves response to steering input and braking and handling performance.  It features loads of torque for blasting off from stoplights, hitting entrance ramps, and rolling on the passing power.

Indian Motorcycles is releasing the Chief Dark Horse®.  It is defined by its matte finish paint and contrasting gloss black details.  New features include ride modes and rear cylinder deactivation.  Other key features include ABS, cruise control, keyless ignition and unrivaled performance from the Thunder Stroke® 111 V-twin engine.

Dual Sport/Off Road

New to the Honda CRF family is the street legal CRF450L. This bike is definitely closely related to the 450R & 450X models. The transmission has added a gear and is now a 6 speed. Increased crank mass, revised valve timing and fueling make it trail and street friendly. It even shares the same bore & stroke as the 450R but the piston is now 3 ring for increased durability.

The 2019 Yamaha YZ250F has an all new engine, new frame, new bodywork and electric start.  With the world’s first production 250 cc motocross bike with a wireless smartphone-based engine tuner, allowing riders to adjust fuel and ignition mapping based on conditions.

This bike is a proven winner on the motocross track with its lightweight 2 stroke engine and class leading handling.

Not to be outdone, BMW adds to the mix with their new S1000RR. This is an inline 4 cylinder powerplant boasting 207 HP with a torque curve above 100 NM from 5500 RPM all the way up to 14,500 RPM. It’s lighter, more powerful and more than its predecessors and has an ergonomically perfect seating position. Want more, add the infamous BMW “M” package to make the ultimate race machine.

Street/Performance

One of the most anticipated bikes of 2019 has to be the Indian FTR1200. Inspired by the championship-winning FTR750 race bike, the flat tracker for the street is here. Fast, agile and thrilling, the all-new FTR 1200 sets a new standard in American motorcycling.

The Ducati Monster 821 Stealth has a more streamlined, agile look with fully redesign tank and tail, an all-new silencer and a headlight that is both classic and contemporary.  The liquid-cooled engine delivers a maximum power of 109 hp at 9250 rpm offering exciting performance, easy riding and unmatched fun.
