Alberta
The current situation in Alberta involves the presence of US and internationally funded environmental groups with some extreme views. Many areas of off road recreation have been closed and many more hectares are under threat. COHV has supported the OHV rider community by;
- Providing funding to AOHVA
- Creating a specific “Call to Action” videos
- Working with professional advisors on advocacy
- Mobilizing other Alberta federations to support the Alberta riders
- Communicating on a regular basis with Alberta powersports dealers to motivate them to join the campaign.
The off-road associations have the experience in their region. Many of the members created the trails and have been riding them for decades. COHV strives to communicate that these volunteers are the biggest asset a government can have. They know the land and they know the issues. In all COHV correspondence, we ask the land managers and government to work with the provincial federation and local clubs to determine the correct balance between recreation and conservation. For more information on Alberta issues please go to www.aohva.com.
British Columbia
British Columbia shares a similar situation to Alberta. The issue is precipitated by caribou herds considered species at risk.
COHV has supported the following:
- Working with local clubs and provincial riding associations
- Working with the Concerned Citizens for Caribou Recovery
- Working with the Dawson Creek Chamber of Commerce
- Creating a specific “Call to Action” video to link to a local petition
